Blue Owl Story
After farming for 3 generations Pieter Quixley the owner of the Riversmeet Farm felt it was time for him to retire. He approached his neighbours Wilfred and Elke Dauphin to see if they would be interested in buying the farm and incorporate it into their farm Allee Bleue.
Surrounded by 2 rivers on the southern and western borders the farm has an abundance of old tress and little forests on the river banks creating a natural conservancy for wild life to shelter and flourish in.
When Allee Bleue acquired the farm they found the wild life to be exceptional on the farm, especially the bird life.
In amongst this wonderful selection of bird life , the most special was the Owls. Within a few days of being on the farm we notice the most beautiful Owl who was living in the old barn on the farm, high up in the wooden roofs rafters.
This was her retreat during the day and at night she would leave the barn for her nightly patrols of the farm, this was most special and exciting to experience.
After some days and weeks had gone by she started to nest in the old barn and much to our amazement she blessed us with 2 baby owlets
It is from this beautiful story that we have named these wines
Chardonnay 2023
Analysis: Alc: 13.% • TA: 5.6 g/l • RS: 3.4 g/l • pH: 3.59
Origin: Franschhoek
Farm location: Franschhoek
Winemaker: Van Zyl du Toit
Grape varieties: 100 % Chardonnay
Style of wine: Unwooded White Wine
Vinification:
After acquiring the farm next door, we found some of the most pristine (and old) chardonnay vineyards. Careful handling in the cellar, whole bunch pressing and fermentation with a bunch of selected yeast strains delivered a beautiful and rich yet fresh wine. Carefully monitored lees contact (sur lie) for 4 months added depth of flavour and character to this elegant wine.
Winemaker’s notes:
A fresh and zesty style of wine, packed with winter melon flavours, apricot nuances and a citrus aftertaste. The palate is silky and smooth, with great balance of fruit and finesse. Drink now or within the next 2 years.
Food pairing:
Pair with fresh pasta with green peppers, ham, and a light creamy herb sauce. Or open a bottle with friends, whilst sitting around the pool.
Pinotage 2021
Origin: Western Cape
Farm location: Franschhoek
Winemaker: Van Zyl du Toit
Grape varieties: 100% Pinotage
Style of wine: Dry Red Wine
Vinification:
The grapes were sourced from our own pristine vineyards and selected sites in the Franschhoek Valley. After harvesting, cooling and sorting, the grapes were crushed to the red fermenters and a cold soak done at 7 deg C for 3 days. After inoculations with yeast the punchdowns started intensively for 4 days before pressing at 8 balling – this ensures a supple and smooth Pinotage. The finished wine underwent malolactic fermentation in barrel and tank, and further maturation on staves for 12 months before blending and bottling.
Winemaker’s notes:
Abundant strawberry and ripe cheery flavours on the nose. Slight hints of chocolate, liquorice and coffee give added complexity. The palate is smooth and soft with beautiful berry fruit that lingers. An elegant tannin structure rounds off this accessible wine which will age well over the next 2-3 years.
Analysis:
Alcohol 13.5 %
Residual Sugar 4.1 gm/L
Total Acidity 5.9 gm/L
pH 3.57
Food pairing:
The wine is a perfect companion for a juicy lamb roast with baby vegetables or fresh pasta at your favourite Italian place. Or enjoy it on its own.
